CHIHUAHUA
This ancient breed was named after the region in Northern
Mexico where it might have originated. The chihuahua's origins
are uncertaind. He might have been brought to maxico by the
chinees; yet it is more likely that he descended from various
Aztec ancestors, including the Techichi. The chihuahua was
a favourite sacred animal of the Aztecs, who consumed the dogs
as holy food and sacrificed them to the gods. The chihuahua also
brought good luck to the home. Several specimens are thought to
have been brought to spain during the spanish conquest.
The chihuahua was first breed in the United states in the
19th century. The breed soon became highly prized and was
recognized by the American kennel Club in 1904. He arrived in
Europe after World war II In 1995, the FCI recognized a new
staddard with a weight range of 0.5 to 3kg (1-6.5 lb), but a
weight between 1 and 2 kg (2.2-4.5 lb) is still preferred.
